European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven
Olympic champion Netherlands suffered second defeat

Eindhoven (pps) Second group match – second defeat for the 2008 Olympic champion! Host Netherlands suffered its second defeat in front of a 2,500 sell-out crowd at Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium losing 9-8 to Hungary in the women’s tournament. The Dutch had lost their first match 11-10 to title defender Russia. However, the Netherlands still have the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals if they beat Great Britain in their last group match on Sunday. “I would be interested to know what happened with my team in the last period. It was rather a mental thing”, said the Dutch head coach, Italian Mauro Maugeri.

Russia and Hungary will play for the top position in Group A on Sunday. Hungary’s last international title dates back to the 2005 World Championships in Montreal. Russia defeated Olympic host Great Britain 15-10 on Friday. The winner of the group qualifies directly for the semi-finals.

Reigning World champion Greece has the best chance for top position in Group B after defeating Germany 12-6 and Italy 10-9 in the opening round. The Italians got back on track with a 15-11 victory over Spain on Friday.

The men’s tournament continues with the fourth preliminary round on Saturday. Record-winning European champion Hungary will meet Greece in Group A. Both teams haven’t yet lost a match. Serbia is the top team in Group B with 9 points and will play Romania. The Romanians have not gained a single point in their three previous matches at these European Championships.
