The Russians beat Hungary 12-9 in their last group match and qualified directly for the semi-finals, as did reigning World champion Greece in Group B. Hungary will have to play the quarter-finals against Spain on Tuesday to reach the semis, while Italy will meet the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. The Italians’ 18-12 win over Germany was never endangered. Spain lost their last match 8-6 to Greece in Group B. 2008 Olympic champion Netherlands took their last chance to make the quarter-finals with a 12-6 win over Olympic host Great Britain after two narrow defeats by Russia (11-10) and Hungary (9-8). The British team presented itself very well and showed great progress despite their three defeats. The Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium was sold out for the third time (2,500) on Sunday. Great Britain and Germany, the two teams without a victory in the preliminary round, will conclude their European Championship tournament with the match for seventh place on Tuesday. The last decisions will be taken in the men’s preliminary round on Monday.
