Title holder Croatia out of the medals!
Eindhoven (pps) Title holder Croatia is out of the medals at the 30th Men’s European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven. Although the Croats defeated Spain narrowly 11-10 in their last group match, they finished only fourth in Group B because rival Germany also won 10-9 against Romania. The head-to-head result between Germany and Croatia, tied by points, was decisive, and Germany had upset Croatia 10-9 on Saturday.
Knowing that they had already achieved top position in their group and reached the semi-finals, four-time World champion Serbia lost their last match 11-7 to rival Montenegro, the 2008 European champion. The Montenegrins who celebrated their first victory over Serbia for three years, thus finished second in Group B.
Hungary, winner of Group A, didn’t have motivation problems even against stark outsider Turkey and, befitting their rank, thrashed them 22-2. “The main issue was to keep our team motivated“, Hungary’s head coach Denes Kemeny disclosed.
2011 World champion Italy ensured second place behind Hungary with a 10-7 win over Greece and will now meet Germany in the quarter-finals, where Montenegro will play Greece. The quarter-finals determine the semi-final opponents of Hungary and Serbia. In front of 1,600 spectators host Netherlands ascertained fourth position in Group A by defeating FYRO Macedonia 10-8.
The women’s tournament continues with just three encounters in Eindhoven on Tuesday. Hungary plays Spain and Italy meets 2008 Olympic champion Netherlands in the quarter-finals. 2012 Olympic host Great Britain and Germany take their leave from the European Championship tournament in the match for seventh place. The two group winners, 2011 World champion Greece and title holder Russia, have directly qualified for the semi-finals on Thursday.
